Description
Model CS-15C Flex and Fold Tester determines the breakdown resistance of leather, vinyl coated fabric, synthetics, rubberoids, paper, and the like. Product applications which call for flexing and folding may cause your material to split, crack, craze, or separate at the seam. To predict these types of degradation, it is important to simulate the mechanical action taking place in your product’s service life environment. The flexing action of the CS-15C replicates the physical stresses normally exerted on fabrics and other materials in various automotive, commercial and industrial environments, allowing you to predict the durability of the materials when assembled in their final form.

Test specimens are easily clamped into one of four sample positions. Three of these positions perform flex testing. The sample is held under a uniform tension of the while moving one end of while moving one end of the sample through a given distance each side of the perpendicular. This action creates flexural stresses and strain on the sample, which simulates normal wear and causes the material to break down. A change in length of the sample gives a further indication of the material’s breakdown.

Once elongated to the point of failure, the bottom of the sample holder triggers a shut-off switch to automatically conclude the test. Upon conclusion of the test, the operator may record the number of cycles indicated on the cycle counter, remove the failed specimen and restart the test for the remaining samples.

The fold test is conducted on the fourth sample, which is clipped into place between two plates at the far end of the instrument. The sample is folded against itself with the finish side out when the two plates are pressed together under a specified tension.

Optional digital cycle counter is available.

Description
The Model CS-39 Stoll Flex tester was engineered to assist textile manufacturers and end users with quality control testing as well as research and development testing. This instrument duplicates the flex abrasion feature of the Stoll Quartermaster Universal Wear Tester (Model CS-22C or Atlas Electric’s UWT model) and also provides for bending, roll and fold testing.

Flex abrasion tests determine the resistance of fabrics to flexing and abrasion when the specimen under controlled compression and tension is subjected to unidirectional reciprocal folding and rubbing over a flex bar. One end of the flex specimen is clamped in a quick acting clamp of the balanced head and then carried around the carbide tipped flexing bar. The other end of the specimen is then clamped in the flexing block. As the flex block (table) reciprocates, the specimen flexes and bends around the flexing bar. The mechanical linkage actuates the electrical flex control switch when the specimen ruptures: thus automatically stopping the instrument and recording the number of cycles at the end of the test. An automatic timer may be used to flex a specimen to desired number of cycles as an alternate to having the specimen rupture. The tension load, placed on the specimen, and the load on the balanced head are adjustable in accordance with the requirements of the test.

MODEL CS-53V2
PILLING TESTER

Description
The newly redesigned Model CS-53V2 Fabric Pilling Tester allows the user to evaluate a fabric material’s tendency to develop pills from fuzz under laboratory conditions that are intended to simulate normal wear. The procedure is generally applicable to all types of fabrics including both woven and knitted fabrics.

The Model CS-53V2 complies with ASTM D3511 but it can also be used for testing according to Ford BN-108-03 or GM9652P with optional accessories.

The CS-53V2 consists of a motor-driven table, which subjects test specimens to a circular rubbing motion. The table rotates at 58 rpm at a 3/4 inch radius. It is supplied with 6 round fabric to fabric specimen holders and the brush board. ASTM D3511 was revised in 1999. The revisions represent a major change from earlier versions of the standard. Specimens are mounted to a round specimen holder and are rubbed against nylon brushes to produce pills. The specimen is then evaluated against visual standards available from ASTM. Standard Scientific LLC no longer supplies the Fabric Evaluation Box in Figure 3 of D3511 and D3512.

FORD BN-108-03 requires specimens to be mounted to the optional rectangular specimen holder (3 required). The specimens are first abraded using the brush board to loosen fibers. Then, the brush board is removed and replaced with the optional sponge board and the specimens are rubbed against sponges to produce pills.

Add the optional cycle counter and accessories to meet General Motors GM9652P. Specimens are abraded against No. 8 duck cloth (not supplied) mounted to the option mounting board for a predetermined number of cycles. The predetermined cycle counter option and the duck cloth mounting board are required for this test.

Recently, Standard Scientific has added the ability to use the CS-53V2 to perform the Ford leather pilling test according to Ford BN-108-14. The special specimen holder with 3 stackable weights totaling 25 pounds is required along with the predetermined cycle counter option. Only one specimen can be tested at a time on the CS-53V2. The Model CS-53L is required for testing more than one specimen at a time.

Description
Standard Scientific‘s Model CS-53L-5 & CS-53L-2 Leather Pilling Testers were designed to meet the requirements of FORD Test Method BN-108-14. Using this test allows the operator to determine the leather’s pilling propensity by simulating conditions of use.

Test specimens are mounted on holders, which are placed on vertical pins. The specimens are then subjected to a rotary motion against a standard abradant cloth for a predetermined number of cycles. The contact pressure between the specimen and the abradant is adjustable by varying the weight of the specimen holders between 10 and 25 pounds. Up to 5 specimens can be tested at one time.

MODEL CS-55

Description
Model CS-55 Compression & Recovery/Thickness Tester was designed to give the technician a versatile measuring instrument. By selection of presser feet, this instrument will meet many ASTM specifications for thickness measurement.

The thickness measurement is made with a pre-load of 0.5 oz. on the specimen. The indenting load is translated from a ball-bearing support to the indenting plunger by means of a screw and hand wheel. With this arrangement, the indenting load (dead weight) may be applied to the specimen without impact to measure the compression, and removed to measure the recovery. Standard weights supplied with the tester are up to and including 2 pounds. The minimum indenting weight is 2 oz. Heavier weights may be obtained at an addition cost. The choice of one of the following presser feet may be had with the Model CS-55: 0.125, 0.250, 0.375 inch and 1.129 inch diameter (1 sq. inch).
Additional sizes (including metric) are available upon request. The dial Indicator supplied with the instrument is graduated in 0.001 inch inches. The indicator may be raised or lowered by means of a screw and hand-wheel to have a range from 0 to 1 inch thickness.

The frame of the tester is of heat-treated cast aluminum. From 5 to 7 pounds of indenting load may be applied with a maximum deflection of 0.0005 inch using a 7 pound load.

MODEL CS-59

SURFACE ABRADER

Description
The evaluation of surface abrasion is essential to determine serviceability of most materials. The Model CS-59 Surface Abrader is a redesign of the Universal Wear Tester for surface abrasion only. The method consists of inflating the test specimen by controlled air pressure and accurately controlling the pressure of the abradant on the specimen by means of dead weights. The specimen may be rotated during the abrasion or abraded uni-directionally. This surface abrasion procedure makes it possible to control the tension of the specimen, the area of contact, and the pressure abradant and minimizes disturbances arising from between the specimen and the unevenness of specimen interference of fabric debris.

The table reciprocates, through 1″ of movement, at the rate of 112 cycles per minute. The surface abrasion head makes one revolution in approximately 100 cycles of the reciprocating table. After the material has been worn through the contact in the diaphragm and the balanced head will come together completing an electrical circuit, thus automatically stopping the instrument and recording the number of cycles on the counter.

Frosting - is a variation in appearance of colored fabrics caused by the concentrated, localized abrasive wear. This condition, characterized by a variation in shade,

Welt Abrasion - test on flocked fabrics simulates at an accelerated rate the abrasive wear encountered on welt edges of furniture upholstery. The sample is mounted so as to form a circular welt and subject to multidirectional abrasive forces.

Pilling Resistance - Described in ASTM D 3514 utilizing optional elastomeric pad.

Description
The Static Extension Tester is available in 3 distinct Models – the standard CS-138, the CS-138M and the NEW CS-138MX. These fixtures are designed and manufactured to meet the testing requirements of ASTM D3107.

The Static Extension Tester was developed to determine the stretch and recovery properties of woven stretch fabrics. Although particularly designed for woven fabrics, this test may also be applicable for knit fabrics, provided that the elongation at 2 pounds/inch is less than 85%. In the determination of fabric stretch, good correlation between per cent fabric stretch at 2 pounds/inch and “hand stretch” was observed for a broad range of stretch fabrics.

The single station tester, Model CS-138, consists of a vertical frame with a fixed clamp at the top, a 50 cm vertical scale and a sliding clamp that operates within the scale range. The 5-station Model CS-138M consists of one Model CS-138 and five fixed clamps mounted on a board. The CS-138M allows three tests each for two specimens at one time. The CS-138 is used to determine the fabric stretch and the CS-138M as well as the single station unit are used to determine the growth after elongation to a predetermined extension. The Model CS-138MX is a six-position unit.

Definitions relating to Static Extension

Fabric Stretch – The extension of a sample at a load of 2 pounds/inch width, expressed as percent of the original length.

Power – The force required to extend an exercised sample to an extended length equal to 85% of the “fabric stretch”, expressed in pounds/inch width.

Unrecovered Tensile Strain Per Cent – The unrecovered length of a sample which has been held in the extended state for a specified time (2 hours), expressed as a per cent of the original length.

Description

Model CS-138K Knit Fabric Stretch Tester is essentially a basic frame with holding clamps, a series of top & bottom hangers, stretch gauge & weights. This tester allows determinations of fabric growth and stretch of knitted fabrics.

For fabric growth, six specimens are required – three having the long dimension parallel to the wale direction and three having the long dimension parallel to the course direction. These specimens remain extended for a two-hour period at the percentage specified before releasing to measure the growth.

For fabric stretch, four specimens are required. These specimens are manually exercised before measuring the stretch at a specified load.

MODEL CS-179

SNAG TESTER

Description

The CS-179 Snag Tester was developed to determine the ability of a woven or knit fabric to resist pilling or snagging of threads. The test is conducted by passing a fabric over the surface of coarse sandpaper while the fabric is held lightly in contact with the sandpaper by presser aprons. The specimen size is 9 inches by 2.5 inches. Specimens cut with the 9 inch dimension parallel to the wales direction and parallel to the courses direction should be prepared.

The test is run by placing the specimen face side down on the abradant paper. Care should be taken not to press the specimen in place. Each apron weighs 1325 grams. Depending upon the material, 1, 2 or 3 aprons may be placed on the sample. The protruding end of the specimen is pulled out of the device with a constant motion, and then evaluated.

Description
The Model CS-209 Newark Flex Tester was designed for testing the flexibility and adhesion of finishes on upholstery leather. The instrument consists of a series of cam actuated piston sets that have a rapid and continuous flexing movement. The test specimens are clamped in the fixed piston block at one end, and at the other end attached to the movable piston clamp. The test specimen is then forced into a flexing pattern by the closing motion of the clamps.

The test instrument features a constant speed drive maintaining a smooth and consistent flexing of test specimens for the full duration of the test. Stroke length is precisely maintained for the life of the instruments with and requires little maintenance. A digital electronic cycle counter/timer may be preset to end the test after a required number of strokes or after a selected time period.
