Workshops

Machine Quilting Techniques - 4 or 6 hours
Have you noticed that many of the award winning quilts are machine quilted? Learn the many techniques used in these quilts. Even the beginner quilter will gain confidence and become good friends with their sewing machine. They will learn to use it as a drawing tool and eventually create some complex designs. We will cover decorative threads, battings, free motion work along with finishing techniques in the six hour class.

Supply List:
  • Machine in good Working Condition - Cleaned and Oiled with new needle
  • Machine Needles #80 or #90 (I like Schmetz Quilting #90)
  • Darning or Free Motion Foot
  • Walking Foot (Optional) - do not go out and purchase a walking foot just for this class as we will be talking about it but all our stitching will be free motion
  • Cotton Threads that contrast with your sandwich
  • Cushion or something to sit on to make you a little higher while machine quilting (optional)

Prepare approximately 5-6 (12" to 15") sandwiches which is a layer of fabric, a layer of batting and a layer of fabric. Pin or spray baste all 3 layers together. If using pins, use safety pins not straight pins. When preparing your sandwiches it is best to use solid colors and then also use contrasting threads.

A New Take on Positive-Negative - 4 or 6 hours
Waves of the Future is a positive-negative block which incorporates pieces from many blocks and combines them with decorative stitches to make a very interesting piece of art. You should go home with a piece that is well underway and easy to finish.

Supply List:
  • Machine in Good Working Condition (Cleaned and Oiled)
  • Machine Needles - Embroidery Needles #90
  • Rotary Equipment
  • Paper Scissors
  • Fabric Scissors (Sharp Embroidery Scissors)
  • Thread to match fabric
  • Marking Pen or Pencil - Fine Point Sharpie
  • Decorative Threads
  • Steam A Seam II - 2 yards will do about 6 squares 12"

Fabric Requirements:
  • 5 Block Wall Hanging - 2 ½ yards background fabric, 4-6 brightly colored squares 12 ½" each, 1 ¼ yards Backing Fabric, ½ yard binding fabric
  • 9 Block Wall Hanging - 2 ½ yards background fabric, 9 brightly colored squares 12 ½" each, 2 ¼ yards Backing Fabric, ½ yard binding fabric

Designing Curves - 6 hours
Take the mystery out of curves. This is a design class even for the non-artist. We will take you step by step in creating a one of a kind design. Many wonderful designs come from this class. You will learn all the techniques necessary to piece your design.

Supply List:
  • Machine in good working condition with a zig-zag
  • Machine Needles #60
  • Paper Scissors
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Fine Sharpie Marker
  • Pencil

  • Flexible Curve (Optional but helpful)
  • Tissue Paper
  • Freezer Paper (enough for the size of the quilt you want to make)
  • Removable Scotch Tape
  • Rotary Equipment
  • Thread to match fabric
  • Clear Invisible Thread .006

Fabric Requirements:
  • Batiks and Hand Dyed Fabrics work very well

If you have gradated fabrics they also work well. Bring just small amounts and we can talk about fabric choices and get you started. The most fabric you will need would be a yard for your background. I can't give you specific amounts as each design will be different.

If you have some old calendars, the lines in some of the photos work well for a starting point. If not look through some magazine ads that have some nice lines and we'll take it from there. And if you don't not a problem as I will be bringing several along.
